In our configuration, that chip was matched with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. Microsoft also claims it worked with AMD to squeeze as much battery life as possible out of the laptop by tuning the bespoke silicon. That offers higher frequencies than the standard Ryzen 7 4800U (and in fact are closer to the Ryzen 7 5800U). This chip has 8 cores and 16 threads, 8 GPU cores, a 2.0-GHz base clock and a 4.4-GHz boost clock.
That isn't to say it doesn't offer impressive performance. AMD and Microsoft worked on a custom processor for the Surface, and it seems that the time it took to make means that it's not based on the latest technology. It's Ryzen 4000, not the latest Ryzen 5000. We reviewed the Surface Laptop 4 with an AMD chip, the AMD Ryzen 7 4980U, or, as Microsoft calls it, the Microsoft Surface Edition. On the price front, we don’t have any official information right now, but we can look back at past Surface Books to get an insight into what the new laptop might cost.
Outside of this it only tends to roll out minor CPU upgrades for its existing devices sporadically throughout the year. If it does it will likely be in 2022 at the earliest as Microsoft only tends to do one Surface launch event per year. With the Surface Laptop Studio looking set to replace the Book as Microsoft’s flagship device for creatives there’s not concrete information if, let alone a new Book 4 will launch. While the fabled Surface Pro 8, Surface Go 3 and Surface Duo 2 made an appearance as expected, the Surface Book 4 was a no show, leaving many wondering about the future of the series.
Microsoft has defied industry rumblings suggesting it would unveil a Surface Book 4 at its September 22 Surface live stream, choosing to unveil a new Surface Laptop Studio in its place.
